My Favorite Bowls

Spring 2023

Ceramic Bowls; Mag-White, Squid Ink, and Rutile Blue Glaze, on Mac10 Throwing Clay.

These bowls where the final part of my first ceramics class. To me they represent the way we fight the earth to be what we want it to be, but how we only achieve contentment when we give as much as we take. Throwing clay is difficult, but in this process I learned to make peace with patience, devotion, feedback, and dirt. These are My Favorite Bowls.

Mexican Water Vessels

Spring 2023

Slab-Built Water Vessels; Dakota Red Clay, hand-built from slab templates. Glazed in Glossy Black and Oatmeal.

This project began with a concept art and a theme. I was instructed to make my vessels with a rolled slab, and to make the vessels a set. I was drawn to hexagonal profiles, and indigenous Central-American pottery, so I designed the models seen here. My next challenge was calculating the arcs for the conical templates, and after I did that, I began with wedging and rolling my clay until it was just over 1/8” thick and as it hardened it reached 1/8”. I needed it to harden so I could manipulate it into the top and bottom cones. Once they hardened, one cone went over the other, and it was ready to be bisque-fired. After the bisque fire, I glazed and carved out my designs, then it went into the high-fire kiln and that concluded the project.

Salmon Cutting Board

Summer 2020

End-Grain Cutting Board; Made from Black Walnut and Maple, then finished and sealed with mineral oil and beeswax.

This board was made through an offer by my friend at Amarant Heart who interested me in woodworking during the first summer of the pandemic, I designed the board and he helped me make a plan to create my design in which I tried to create an optical illusion of curves and concave perspective. I first cut my individual strips of maple and walnut, then I arranged them in the correct order and glued and cut them, I then repeated this process with the new strips and it resulted in this orientation of high-contrast wood.
